Responsive Classroom

September 2007

Dear Parents:

We all recognize Character Education as an important part of our children’s lives.  At Cincinnatus Elementary we will be focusing on the social skills as outlined by Responsive Classroom:  Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy and Self-control.  We hope to encourage students to live the adage, “Character is doing what’s right, even when no one is looking.”

Each month we will focus on one specific social skill.  The social skill and supporting weekly quotes will be introduced in the classrooms.  Teachers will discuss the social skill and quotes with students.  The Lion on the cover of this packet is displayed throughout the building as a visible reminder to “have the courage to do the right thing” and to be a person who cares.

Students will have opportunities within the classroom to observe how well classmates are demonstrating the social skill of the month.  Lastly, when staff members notice a student demonstrating the monthly social skill, they will complete and submit a form describing the behavior.  These will be read aloud at school assemblies and then displayed on our “Cincy C.A.R.E.S” bulletin board.

How can you help?  Look for the C.A.R.E.S. Corner in our monthly school newsletter.  There you will find the monthly social skill and ideas for how you can support and reinforce it at home.  Also, if you see a Cincy student out in the community demonstrating the social skill of the month, please take a moment to jot down the incident and send it to school.  There will be a simple form for you to use included in the newsletter.

Thank you in advance for your support of this program.

Sincerely,
